8:50 am: arriving at BNP Paribas – Fortis. Time passes by quickly… as I’m writing this, I realize it’s already 4 months since I started working for 4C Consulting. My first day I spent at the 4C offices, filling in forms, getting to know some of my new colleagues, receiving a fully-installed laptop (in my experience it’s rare to get it fully prepared the first day…), entry badge and a car key :-) . I am part of the Customer/Business Intelligence practice led by Luc Colson. He freed up time to talk about my interests in general and in the ongoing projects more specifically. The second day I immediately started with a project on-site at Fortis Bank, in a team of 6 people providing assistance in the project management, analysis, configuration, implementation, training and user adoption of Unica’s Affinium Suite for Marketing Resource Management and Campaign Management.
As project leader of the ROMI (Return On Marketing Investment) track in the second release, my goal is to incorporate response data in Affinium and to gather and share all information required for ROMI calculation in order to create ROMI reports, consultable by Campaign Managers and Marketing Management. The past few months I have been organizing workshops with all involved parties to gather the business’ needs concerning campaign evaluations, to learn what type of evaluations are done already and to have a solid idea of possible pitfalls and mistakes from the past.
Today I am applying the last changes to my functional analysis document: the final version! This is a very satisfying moment: All effort of the past months has led to this document, which has received a lot of positive feedback and already got the approval of all involved parties.

11 am: meeting with IS. Since the first version of the functional analysis, we have been having weekly meetings with the customer’s IS people responsible for CRM applications. The goal of these meetings is to keep them posted about requested changes and feedback given by the business; at the same time they challenge us on those elements that still seem unclear or undecided.

1:00 pm: lunch. We nearly always have lunch together at the Fortis restaurant. There is a variety of warm dishes that seduces most of the colleagues in my team. I’m usually going for a sandwich though. Today the “discovery sandwich” contains shrimps in garlic and iceberg lettuce… Yummie!

2:30 pm: meeting at the 4C offices. I arrive at the 4C offices in Haren to participate in two meetings. The first meeting is with Luc who briefs me about a new project. A Slovenian bank wants us to perform segmentations on their customer database and to create propensity-to-buy models, predicting cross and up-selling. Data mining is one of my preferred fields of interest, so I’m really looking forward to working on this project!

4:00 pm: Practice meeting. Once in three months there is a practice meeting. Each meeting is about a specific topic in Customer or Business Intelligence. This one is about Operations Research. Our senior colleague Steven recently finished a project at Sanoma, implementing a method to (globally) optimize the distribution of magazines to the POS (Points Of Sale). Tests showed that he did an outstanding job, so we are all curious to learn more about the project, the applied methodology, the encountered issues and the lessons learnt. At the end of the meeting, time has been foreseen for some small optimization exercises in SAS.

6:00 pm: A drink. Many 4C meetings are followed by a drink, giving opportunity to catch up with colleagues who work on other projects. There is a very pleasant atmosphere at 4C. My colleagues are very skilled and work hard, but there’s always room for humor, laughter and personal stories. The perfect mix to feel at home quite rapidly…
